TkZip - Limitations and Dependencies in the Current Release
- The program requires at least Tcl/Tk release 7.4/4.0. Plans to support 3.6
were dropped as of December, 1996, with the release of Tcl/Tk 8.0.
It does not require any of the popular toolkit extensions.
Some functions, such as the color customization dialogue, are disabled
under versions of Tk older than 4.2.
-
Windows support is pretty solid now.
It is still a bit clumsy and inelegant to install, though,
and not as well documented as I'd like.
I plan to address that by releasing a Starpack version for Windows.
-
The builtin installer is pretty clunky and unintuitive. I plan to replace that.
- At present, no global location for the options file is searched - it uses $Home/.TkZip.rc or
nothing. (There is no need to create/edit this file, all options are set from within the
program.)
- Diskette device names are assumed to start with "fd", and a variety of commonly used tape devices
is recognized (including "ftape").
Tape positioning support for multi-file non-rewinding tapes was added in 0.5.21.
No support for multi-volume archives yet. Sorry.
- The program is happiest on a system that has GNU tar/gzip. (You would be too.)
To get the most out of the program, you should have GNU tar/gzip, bzip2 and Info-ZIP
(zip/unzip) installed. (If you're running on a system for which these programs are not
available, you should consider changing systems.)
For links to the download locations for these standard
compression/archiving utilities, see the
Info-ZIP home page.
Enhancements for Future Releases
- Replace the klunky builtin installer.
- Build a Starpack release for Windows users.
- Redesign the color/scrollbar appearance dialogue. It's ugly.
- Revisit the idea of redesigning the GUI altogether.
- Major code refactoring.
Known Bug-like Features
For the most part, if I knew about them, they wouldn't be there.
But, since no non-trivial piece of software is 100% free of bugs,
I will list things here that I have discovered or had reported,
but haven't gotten around to fixing yet.
- A nit. The column headings of the archive directory listings don't scroll
horizontally with the listing. Betcha didn't even notice.
It's a design flaw, not a code bug, so it isn't likely to change soon.
